The first stage of the digestion process begins in the mouth.
Many people think that our digestion begins in the stomach. Not all, it begins in the mouth. When you start to chew your food salivary glands in your mouth release saliva. Your saliva has the dual role of making your food easier to swallow as well as breaking it down.
Your saliva contains ptyalin, a digestive enzyme that helps breakdown carbohydrates before they enter the stomach. Once swallowed your food will pass down through the esophagus which is the long circular tube that connects the mouth to your stomach.

Roughly 2 liters of digestive juices are produced by your stomach each day. These juices contain hydrochloric acid and a digestive enzyme called pepsin begin to break down the protein and fats contained in the food and convert this into amino acids. This digestion process will take approximately 4 to 5 hours and by this stage the digested content of the stomach is often referred to as chyme. The chyme will then move onto the small intestine.
When the chyme enters the small intestines the process of absorption begins. There are three parts to your small intestines and they are called the duodenum, jejunum and the ileum. The duodenum is at the top end of the small intestine and attached to stomachs exit. At this point digestive juices and bile flow into the duodenum, while other digestive juices are secreted from the intestinal walls.
The chyme moves to the jejunum which is the middle section of the small intestine and it is here the vast majority of nutrients are absorbed into the body. The ileum is the final part of the smaller intestine and this is where the last remaining nutrients are absorbed before entry to the large intestine.
Also known as the colon, your large intestine is primarily involved in the function of cleaning out and elimination. What ever is left over from the small intestine will be prepared in the colon for excretion from the body. This will comprise of insoluble fibers, undigested foods, fat, toxic bacteria and dead cells.
A key function of the large intestine is to absorb water in order to lubricate the waste material so it can be moved along. Within the walls of the colon there are muscles and they create muscular contractions to help the movement of waste matter towards the anus.
The last part of the colon is the rectum and when this area fills up it will trigger muscles that will excrete it from the body. When these muscles in the rectum trigger you will have that urge to go.
