Acid flowing up into the esophagus can be caused by a number of factors. One of the most common is the type of food you eat. If you have acid reflux you’ll know certain foods can trigger a reflux.

These common trigger foods can include…

  • fried foods
  • fatty meats
  • citrus fruits
  • coffee and alcohol.

These foods are acid forming and make your stomach create more acid because they’re hard to digest.

Another reason for acid reflux (GERD) is the amount of food you eat. Eating large meals increases the levels of acid in your stomach resulting in indigestion.

This causes a build up of pressure, which pushes up against the LES and forces it to open.

Acid can travel up as far as the throat, coating the inside of your mouth, larynx and saliva. As you breathe out the acid coated saliva in your throat and mouth produces the strong odor that is acid reflux bad breath.

Bad breath caused by your acid reflux is very pungent and acidic smelling. This is because the hydrochloric acid in your stomach is mixed in with bile, enzymes and of course undigested food particles.
