Colon Cancer Symptoms In Women

Colon Cancer is the second most common of type cancer affecting women in the US and the UK.

The disease can also be referred to as colorectal or colon rectal cancer as it can effect the rectal area, which is the bottom part of the colon ending with the anus.

As with all cancers the earlier the diagnosis the easier it is to treat and the higher the rate of survival.

Most Common Colon Cancer Symptoms In Women

Blood In The Stool

Blood in the stool does not automatically indicate colon cancer. There are several digestive disorders that can cause this symptom with hemorrhoids being a common one.

However, you can detect a difference with hemorrhoids as the blood tends to appear at the end of stool. This is because the ulcerations are located around the entrance to the anus.

With colon cancer blood can appear on the surface or inside the stool. The blood can be bright red or even dark brown or black, which may indicate a potential tumor or ulcer further up the colon. In the later stages of the cancer the stool can also be coated in lots of mucus.

If  blood appears on your stool regularly and you have a family history of cancer, then its better to be on the safe side and have yourself checked out by your doctor.

Changes To Your Bowel Movements

We all have changes to our bowel movements which is often the result of a change in diet or new a environment. However, there are a number of irregular changes that you need to keep a close eye on, especially if they become persistent.

Here are common examples;

  • irregular or slow moving bowel movements
  • loose stool
  • thin ribbon like stools
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • excessive gas
  • bloating
  • pelvic pain
  • unexplained weight loss
  • a feeling of fullness after passing a stool

Again, these can be symptoms related to other digestive disorders or inflammatory bowels diseases. However, with colon cancer these symptoms can become intermittent to start with and then gradually become more frequent and severe as time goes on.

As always – if the symptoms become persistent – see your doctor immediately.

Distended Abdomen

This happens when your abdomen begins to protrude outwards due to a build up off pressure from within the large or small intestines.

An abdominal distension can be caused by an impacted colon as a result of a hardened stool becoming blocked inside the intestinal canal. The blockage causes the fecal matter to build up creating pressure and a protrusion in the lower abdomen. This can happen in severe cases of chronic constipation.

There is a possibility that a colon polyps could also be causing a blockage resulting in a distended stomach and constipation.

Fortunately, in most cases these are noncancerous polyps, however there is the risk they could turn cancerous. Again, check with your doctor if you persistently feel a protrusion from your stomach or lower abdominal area. It may require screening or a colonoscopy to identify the true cause.

Your Diet And Lifestyle

More than ever, medical research is telling us that the state of our health and the causes of disease begin in our gut. These two outcomes are also hugely affected by the diet we eat and lifestyle we lead.

You risk of colon and bowel cancers could increase if you…..

  • smoke
  • drink alcohol excessively
  • eat lots of red meat
  • eat lots of fat
  • eat lots of processed foods
  • eat a diet low in fiber
  • don’t exercise regularly

Unfortunately, these days we are eating diets that are highly processed, are lacking in nutrients and hard to digest. This combination is detrimental to the health of your digestive tract and immune system.

For example, undigested foods accumulating in your colon will begin to rot and turn toxic. This can lead to an  inflammation of the intestinal wall and encourage the spread of yeast infections and pathogenic bacteria.

The rise of fast food and unhealthy eating is causing an epidemic of digestive disorders as well as an increase in colon related cancers.

Reducing Your Risk Of Colon Cancer

There is no guarantee that leading a healthy lifestyle will make you immune to cancer, however it will certainly reduce the risk and in many cases, lower it considerably.

Your gastrointestinal tract is home to billions of bacteria both good and bad. Fortunately, the bad bacteria are in such small numbers that they are harmless. However, problems start when this fragile balance is disturbed.

Junk food, smoking, alcohol, a dependence on drugs and antibiotics eventually erode your good bacteria leaving the path clear for harmful and disease causing pathogens to overrun your system.

The fact is, most of us have an unbalanced digestive system and if you want to remain healthy you need to improve your diet by eating more

  • dietary fiber
  • raw fruits and vegetables
  • nuts, seeds and wholegrains and
  • at least a litre of clean water a day
