Does diarrhea cause weight loss and if it does is it really a healthy weight loss strategy that you should pursue or avoid?

How Diarrhea Causes Weight Loss

Acute diarrhea can also be caused by changes in diet or even stress.

2. Chronic Diarrhea

Chronic diarrhea is more constant and may be a symptom of an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or the malabsorption of fat and carbohydrates.

Chronic diarrhea is often the result of a chronic digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis, celiac disease or crohns disease.

These disorders can be genetic, but in the majority of cases diet plays an influential factor.

For example, wheat or a gluten intolerance can lead to symptoms of diarrhea in Celiac and Crohns disease.

3. Malabsorptive  Diarrhea

Malabsorption diarrhea can be caused by fat or carbohydrate malabsorption.

Fat malabsorption can be the result of low pancreatic enzyme levels causing impaired digestion of fats in the diet.

The main cause is chronic pancreatitis an inflammation of the pancreas often caused by long term alcohol damage or cystic fibrosis.

Chronic pancreatitis can also cause to weight loss.

Small bowel diseases such as eosinophilic gastroenteritis and tropical sprue are rare conditions that can impair the absorption of fat.

Food Intolerance

Watery diarrhea can be caused by another form of malabsorptive diarrhea such as carbohydrate malabsorption which is an intolerance to sorbitol, fructose and lactose.

A lactose intolerance with cause abdominal bloating and excessive gas after eating dairy products.

Certain ethnic groups such as Asian Americans and African Americans are more prone to lactose intolerance.

Consuming certain soft drinks, dried fruits or sweets containing fructose and sorbitol and cause diarrhea in people with a fructose and sorbitol intolerance.

Can Bacterial Overgrowth Cause Diarrhea

An overgrowth of bad bacteria in the gut can reduce the absorption of essential nutrients resulting in slow bowel movement, abdominal cramping, flatulence and diarrhea.
